Chapter Ten

Darcy was almost disappointed Wednesday evening when the phone rang and Leanne announced June would be back to work the next morning. Vince mumbled something about things getting back to normal in his kitchen and stormed out of the room.

Darcy looked across the coffee table at Leanne. “I guess that means I’m out of a job.”

“Looks that way. Listen, Darcy, we really appreciate you filling in the way you did. I’m not going to charge you rent for this week. You’ve been a big help, and between tips and what Vince pays, you’re still in the red.”

Darcy shook her head. “I told you I wasn’t helping out for the money. The last three days have been a blast. And it’ll really lend authenticity to the book. I got a lot more out of the situation than Vince did.”

“I wouldn’t say that.”

Darcy reddened. “What’s that supposed to mean?”

Leanne shrugged and stood up. She rearranged the magazines in the magazine rack. When she finished, she set her hands on her hips. “Just don’t let Vince convince you he hated this arrangement as much as he pretends.”

“That’s good to hear. I would’ve thought he’d prefer a root canal from the way he acted with me there.”

Leanne shook her head. “That’s just Vince. He really likes you, Darcy. If he didn’t, you wouldn’t get under his skin so easily.” She took the remote off the entertainment center and faced the TV. “Want to see what’s on tonight?”

Darcy stood up. “No, I think I’ll turn in. We’ve got an early morning tomorrow.”

Leanne clasped the remote between both hands. “That’s right. Camden, South Carolina.”

“Granny Bean’s Barbeque,” Darcy echoed her enthusiasm. “Wake up is at four.” She headed for the staircase, hoping as she went that Leanne’s comments about Vince were correct and wondering why she even cared.

Thursday morning she woke up as planned to begin her excursion to South Carolina for lunch in a little cafe, famous across three states for its barbeque chicken. The restaurant had started out on the front porch of a sour tempered old woman who loved to cook almost as much as she loved to eat. When word leaked out—which was a testament in itself to the quality of the food since middle Carolinians were notoriously tightlipped about their barbeque—that Hephzibah Bean made the best ribs, chicken and sweet potato pie in three counties, folks started taking the Camden Exit off Interstate 20 to buy it by the cooler load to take back home.

It wasn’t long before Granny Bean, as she was known, couldn’t keep up with demand and recruited a couple of granddaughters to cook and wait on customers. The health department and Uncle Sam got wind of the operation and came out to see if they could get a piece of the pie, so to speak. To bring the place up to code, a grandson and two great nephews boxed in the front porch, added refrigeration units, larger ovens and a sprinkler system.

Folks still came from miles around for the barbeque.
